• 1364 The University of Kraków is founded with papal approval. The Polish King Casimir III the Great thereby establishes the second university in Central Europe.
• 1664 Tartuffe, a comedy in five acts by Molière, has its world premiere in Versailles. This first version causes a scandal because of its drastic and revolutionary criticism of religious hypocrisy, leading to a ban on the play.
• 1925 Paul von Hindenburg is elected as the second Reich President of the Weimar Republic.
• 1940 The air war in the Second World War also begins in Germany when the Royal Air Force carries out its first bombing raid against German cities with 35 bombers, on Mönchengladbach.
• 1941 The Berlin inventor Konrad Zuse presents the Z3 computer, which he built in collaboration with Helmut Schreyer—the first fully functional programmable computer.
• 1949 On the basis of the Jessup–Malik Agreement concluded on 4 May, the Soviet Union ends the eleven-month blockade of Berlin.

• 1984 The new Grand Prix circuit at the Nürburgring is opened. The first race held on the new circuit is a show race for touring cars in which Formula 1 world champions Keke Rosberg and Niki Lauda, among others, compete. Ayrton Senna is the winner.
• 1998 The Hamburg Regional Court issues a ruling on liability for links on the internet, to which countless website disclaimers subsequently refer.
• 2018 Despite a win on the final matchday, Hamburger SV is relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time, as the last founding member of the Bundesliga, after 55 seasons of league membership.
