• 1949 The German Press Agency (dpa) is founded in Goslar. It begins operations on 1 September.
• 1949 The German sports goods company Adidas AG is founded in Herzogenaurach.
• 1959 The British compact car Mini, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis for the British Motor Corporation, goes on sale.
• 1960 The first contraceptive pills are offered in the United States under the brand name Enovid.
• 1962 The first joint concert of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr takes place at Hulme Hall in Birkenhead.
• 1976 The evangelical pastor Oskar Brüsewitz sets himself on fire in the middle of the street in Zeitz to protest against human rights violations in the GDR. He dies of his injuries four days later.
