• 1772 At the Ducal Opera House in Braunschweig, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's bourgeois tragedy Emilia Galotti is premiered by Karl Theophil Döbbelin on the occasion of the Duchess Philippine Charlotte's birthday. Lessing himself is not present at the premiere.
• 1781 The Hanoverian-British amateur astronomer Wilhelm Herschel discovers the planet Uranus.
• 1920 Wolfgang Kapp declares the democratically elected German Reich government under Gustav Bauer deposed, the National Assembly dissolved, and himself Reich Chancellor following the military occupation of the Berlin government quarter. Four days later, the Kapp Putsch collapses.
