• 1715 With the death of the French King Louis XIV, one of the longest reigns of a European monarch comes to an end at the age of 72. His five-year-old great-grandson Louis XV succeeds him under the regency of his grand-uncle Philippe II de Bourbon, Duke of Orléans.
• 1902 At the Paris Olympia, moviegoers can see the first science-fiction film. The feature film A Trip to the Moon, directed by Georges Méliès, becomes a great success.
• 1928 The Comedian Harmonists make their debut at Erik Charell's Grand Theatre in Berlin.
• 1939 The Second World War begins at 4:45 a.m. with the shelling of the Westerplatte near Danzig by the German naval training ship Schleswig-Holstein and the invasion of Poland by German troops.
