• 1640 By storming the royal palace, the Portuguese Cortes end the personal union between Portugal and Spain. John IV of the House of Braganza becomes the first king of Portugal, which is independent once more.
• 1884 Workers' health insurance comes into force in the German Empire. Employers contribute one third and workers two thirds of the contributions. The reform is a milestone in the history of social insurance in Germany.
• 1903 The first Western in the history of film, The Great Train Robbery (The Great Train Robbery) by Edwin S. Porter, is premiered in the USA. Max Aronson plays three roles in it.
• 1925 Germany and the victorious powers of the First World War sign the Locarno Treaties in London, which were negotiated in Locarno on 16 October and are intended to normalize relations between the states. Germany thereby recognizes the western border laid down in the Treaty of Versailles.

• 1990 During the construction of the Eurotunnel, the breakthrough is made. For the first time since the last Ice Age, it is possible to walk from the European mainland to Great Britain with dry feet.
• 1993 The German music television channel VIVA goes on air.
