• 1742 The State Opera Unter den Linden, built to plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in the Palladian style, is opened in Berlin as the Royal Court Opera with Carl Heinrich Graun's work Cleopatra e Cesare.
• 1835 The Ludwig Railway begins operation between Nuremberg and Ludwigsbahnhof in Fürth. The route of the first German railway is 6.05 km long, a distance that George Stephenson, the British railway pioneer, covers in about nine minutes with his 10-horsepower locomotive named Adler.
• 1904 Emil von Behring establishes Behringwerke in Marburg with the two million marks he received in 1901 as the first Nobel laureate in Medicine.
