• 1349 During the Black Death plague pandemic in Europe, the "Valentine's Day massacre" occurs in Strasbourg, a pogrom in which more than 2,000 Jewish citizens of the city are killed.
• 1876 Alexander Graham Bell applies to the US Patent Office for a patent for his invention of the telephone. He beats Elisha Gray by two hours, who therefore loses out to Bell with his patent application, even though he is already far ahead of him with his experiments on sound transmission.
• 1908 The world's first ski lift, developed and built by innkeeper Robert Winterhalder and powered by the water power of a mill, is officially opened in Schollach near Eisenbach in the High Black Forest.
