• 1534 At the scheduled elections to the Münster City Council, the Anabaptists prevail. The newly elected mayor Bernd Knipperdolling immediately begins establishing the Anabaptist kingdom of Münster together with the city councillors Bernd and Heinrich Krechting and the prophets Jan Matthys, Jan van Leiden and Bernd Rothmann.
• 1775 The play The Unnecessary Precaution, or The Barber of Seville (La Précaution inutile ou le Barbier de Séville) by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais has its world premiere in Paris. The play fails to impress the audience because it is overloaded with political and personal allusions.
• 1893 Rudolf Diesel receives a patent for operating methods and embodiments of combustion engines, now known as the diesel engine.
• 1905 Paul Percy Harris founds the first Rotary Club in Chicago. The organization, which has since spread worldwide and comprises people from high society, devotes itself to charitable and philanthropic causes.

• 2008 Wladimir Klitschko wins his boxing match against Sultan Ibragimov at Madison Square Garden in New York by a points decision over 12 rounds and thereby becomes the IBF/WBO world heavyweight champion. It is the first title unification of the two boxing organizations since 1999.
