• 1875 In the German Empire, the new Imperial Law on the Certification of Civil Status and Marriage, which originated during the Kulturkampf, mandates compulsory civil marriage and permits divorce. The law takes effect on January 1, 1876.
• 1919 The National Assembly of the Weimar Republic, convened to draft a constitution, meets for the first time in Weimar to escape the revolutionary unrest in Berlin.
• 1936 Adolf Hitler opens the IV Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Skier Willy Bogner speaks the Olympic oath.
• 1952 Elizabeth II becomes Queen and head of state of the United Kingdom and various other Commonwealth realms following the death of her father, George VI. She learns of this after spending the night at the Treetops Hotel in Kenya.
• 1958 During a stopover at Munich-Riem Airport en route from Belgrade to Manchester, British European Airways Flight 609 crashes. 23 of 44 passengers, including almost the entire team of the English football club Manchester United, lose their lives.
• 1959 US engineer Jack Kilby files a patent for the first integrated circuit.
• 1979 At the Bremer Rolandmühle, a cable fire triggers the largest flour dust explosion in German history. 14 dead, 17 partly severely injured, and property damage of approximately 50 million euros are the result.
• 1980 The Federal Constitutional Court rules that the peaceful use of nuclear energy is compatible with the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. A constitutional complaint regarding the licensing procedure for the Mülheim-Kärlich nuclear power plant is unsuccessful.
• 1996 A charter plane of Turkish Birgenair, a Boeing 757 with flight number 301, crashes into the Atlantic shortly before midnight local time after takeoff from Puerto Plata Airport in the Dominican Republic. 189 people die, including 164 German tourists.
• 2000 In the runoff election for the Finnish presidency, Tarja Halonen wins, becoming the first woman elected to this office.
• 2004 Gerhard Schröder announces his intention to hand over the SPD party chairmanship to Franz Müntefering. Formally, a special party conference is required for the handover, which takes place on March 21.
• 2023 Two earthquakes on the Turkish-Syrian border with magnitudes of 7.4 and 7.8 claim over 56,800 lives and more than 111,000 injured.
