• 1356 Emperor Charles IV proclaims the first 23 elaborated chapters of the Imperial Law Book in Nuremberg. In the document later known as the Golden Bull, the coronation of the Roman-German kings and emperors is regulated, and electoral privileges are recorded.
• 1863 The world's first subway, the Metropolitan Railway in London, opens between Farringdon and Paddington. The line is today part of the London Underground.
• 1920 The peace treaty signed in Versailles enters into force. As a result, the League of Nations, based on Woodrow Wilson's 14-Point Program, is founded, with the goal of permanently securing peace under the impression of the First World War.
• 1927 In Berlin, the feature film Metropolis by Fritz Lang premieres. The most expensive film in German film history up to that point is a financial flop and drives the UFA, already in deficit due to the Parufamet agreement with Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, into even greater difficulties.

• 1961 In East Berlin, the imprimatur for the final volume of the German Dictionary is granted. 123 years after its beginning by the Brothers Grimm, the work comprising approximately 320,000 entries is now complete.
• 1975 German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt opens the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg.
• 1978 The East Berlin office of the Hamburg news magazine Der Spiegel is to be closed following a decision by the GDR Foreign Ministry. The magazine had previously reported on an opposition in the country.
• 2000 AOL and Time Warner announce their intention to merge. The new company is to be called AOL Time Warner.
• 2017 FIFA decides that 48 teams in a total of 16 groups of three teams each will participate starting from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The duration of the group stage remains the same, and a round of 32 is added to the knockout system.
