• 1342 During the Magdalene flood, large parts of Central Europe are inundated by the rivers Rhine, Main, Danube, Moselle, Vltava, Elbe, Weser, Werra and Unstrut. It is presumed to be the worst flood of the 2nd millennium.
• 1894 The first race in motor sport takes place from Paris to Rouen. 17 of the 21 starting vehicles reach the finish. The fastest, Albert de Dion, is demoted to 2nd place. The reliability run is the first official car race in the history of sport.
• 1933 After completing the first solo circumnavigation of the world, Wiley Post lands at Floyd Bennett Field in New York. He was en route for seven days, 18 hours and 49 minutes and made eleven intermediate landings.
• 1938 In the German Reich, the identification card is introduced as a domestic identity document, entailing disadvantages for Jews. The identity card later replaces this photo ID.
• 1944 At the Bretton Woods Conference, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank are founded, and an international monetary system of fixed exchange rates is adopted.
• 1962 The Mariner 1 space probe launches towards Venus, but has to be destroyed after approximately 3 minutes due to a deviation from its flight path.
• 1985 The Schleswig-Holstein state parliament passes a resolution to establish the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.
• 1990 The People's Chamber of the GDR passes the Länder Introduction Act, which is to enter into force on 14 October.
• 2005 The Russian Yelena Gadzhievna Isinbayeva becomes the first woman to clear a height of five metres in the pole vault.
• 2009 The longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century occurs over India, China and the Pacific Ocean.
• 2011 In two attacks in Norway, 77 people die and dozens are injured. A bomb attack occurs in the government district in Oslo, and a terrorist attack occurs at a holiday camp of the Norwegian Young Socialists (AUF) on the island of Utøya. The attacker is the Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik.
• 2016 In an attack motivated by right-wing extremism, an 18-year-old German-Iranian man shoots nine people dead at and inside the Olympia shopping centre in the Munich district of Moosach, and then kills himself.
