• 1942 During Germany's Russian campaign in the Second World War, the second phase of Operation Blue, Operation Braunschweig, begins. The resulting fragmentation of the forces is one of the central reasons for the later downfall of the 6th Army in the Battle of Stalingrad.
• 1952 The Treaty of Paris of 18 April 1951, which establishes the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), enters into force.
