• 1783 Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's play Nathan the Wise is premiered in Berlin two years after the poet's death. With it, Lessing has erected a literary monument to his friend Moses Mendelssohn.
• 1849 During the March Revolution of 1848/49, Lajos Kossuth declares the independence of Hungary from the Austrian Empire and proclaims the republic in the Great Reformed Church in Debrecen. This leads to the Hungarian War of Independence.
• 1894 On Broadway in New York, the first Kinetoscope parlor is opened with ten viewing booths developed by William K. L. Dickson for Edison for the viewing of films.
• 1912 At around 23:40, the Titanic strikes an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The White Star Line vessel under Captain Edward John Smith sinks within a few hours, and 1,514 people lose their lives.
