• 1191 Henry VI of the Hohenstaufen dynasty is crowned as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in Rome by Pope Celestine III, who had opposed it.
• 1874 In Paris, thirty painters exhibit their works in the studio of the photographer Nadar. Among them is also Claude Monet's painting “Impression, Sunrise” (“Impression, soleil levant”). The article headline inspired by it, “L'exposition des Impressionnistes,” gives the new art movement Impressionism its name.
• 1888 A few friends found the football club BFC Germania 1888 in the Berlin suburb of Tempelhof. It is the oldest football club in Germany still in existence today.
• 1912 The transatlantic liner Titanic sinks in the Atlantic at around 2:20 a.m. after colliding with an iceberg. Between 1490 and 1517, people die. The Carpathia, which is the first to arrive at the disaster site, finds only lifeboats.
• 1945 The Bergen-Belsen concentration camp is liberated through an unopposed surrender to British-Canadian troops under Bernard Montgomery.
