• 1854 The Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph marries Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, the 16-year-old daughter of the Bavarian Duke Max Joseph, known as “Sisi,” in Vienna. The wedding in the Augustinian Church is officiated by Cardinal Joseph Othmar von Rauscher in the presence of 70 bishops and prelates.
• 1915 With the arrest of the first 200–400 members of the Armenian upper class in Istanbul on the order of Interior Minister Talât Pascha, the Armenian genocide begins in the Ottoman Empire.
• 1923 In Leipzig, Sigmund Freud's treatise The Ego and the Id is published, in which he presents the structural model of the psyche of the “ego,” the “id” and the “superego” in psychoanalysis for the first time.

• 2013 In the collapse of a building of the Rana Plaza textile factory in Sabhar, Bangladesh, 1127 people are killed and 2438 are injured.
