• 1531 In the Battle of Cappel during the religiously motivated Second War of Kappel, the Zurich side is defeated by the five Catholic cantons (Lucerne, Schwyz, Unterwalden, Uri and Zug). The reformer Huldrych Zwingli falls in the battle.
• 1727 For the coronation of George II, George Frideric Handel's Coronation Anthems are premiered at Westminster Abbey.
• 1899 Emperor William II grants the Prussian technical universities the right to confer doctorates (Dr.-Ing.).
• 1931 On the initiative of Alfred Hugenberg, the anti-democratic Harzburger Front, which was directed against the Weimar Republic, is founded.
