• 1806 During the War of the Fourth Coalition, Napoleon enters Berlin, the Prussian capital, following his victory in the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt.
• 1904 In New York, the subway officially opens after four years of construction. The first line runs from City Hall via Grand Central Station and Times Square to the corner of Broadway and 145th Street in Harlem.
• 1922 Italian Fascists begin the “March on Rome,” announced by Benito Mussolini, to seize power in Italy.
• 1938 The Foreign Office of the German Reich orders the “complete expulsion of all Jews of Polish nationality.” That same evening, the Gestapo begins making arrests in public view. Thousands of people are deported to Poland during the following night.
• 1956 With the conclusion of the Saar Treaty, Saarland joins the Federal Republic of Germany as its tenth federal state.
• 1961 Soviet and American tanks face each other at Checkpoint Charlie after East German border guards had prevented the Western Allies from entering the Soviet sector. On October 28, both sides withdraw again.
• 1962 During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a Soviet submarine comes under fire from U.S. destroyers. One of the officers, Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov, refuses, without further orders from Moscow, to fire nuclear-armed torpedoes and thereby presumably prevents a nuclear war.
• 1968 In Mexico City, the Games of the XIX Olympiad come to an end. Among the athletes who no longer compete as an all-German team, the GDR squad ranks ahead of the West German team in the medal table.
• 1969 The Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (Economics Nobel Prize) is awarded for the first time. The announced laureates are Ragnar Anton Kittil Frisch and Jan Tinbergen, who developed econometric models.
• 1980 An outage of the Internet's predecessor (ARPANET), triggered by the spread of a faulty routing update, makes the network unusable for the few thousand hosts for six hours and leads, among other things, to the development of a secure routing protocol.
• 1998 After the SPD's victory in the 1998 Bundestag election, Gerhard Schröder is elected as the 7th German Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• 2005 The accidental death of two teenagers in the Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois sparks unrest lasting several weeks.
