• 1873 At Schönbrunn Palace, Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, and Tsar Alexander II of Russia sign the Three Emperors' Agreement, which aims to isolate France.
• 1904 With the B.Z., the first German tabloid newspaper goes on sale in Berlin at noon.
• 1940 During the Wagner-Bürckel operation, more than 6,000 German Jews are deported by the National Socialists to Camp de Gurs in France.
• 1943 A bombing raid on Kassel by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War destroys large parts of the city and claims the lives of approximately 7,000 people.
• 1962 Following the discovery of Soviet missile launch sites in Cuba, U.S. President John F. Kennedy announces a blockade of air and maritime traffic to the island during the emerging Cuban Missile Crisis.
